Route

The original Nello ride in 1997 went from Topsham to Venice. Although the exact route has been lost in history, thanks to the Ride for Life website we do know the end points of each day, plus some of the major towns visited en route. Our aim is to follow this route in reverse with a few minor detours, including a ‘rest’ day at the base of Alpe d’Huez. There was a discussion about climbing one of the toughest ascents on the Tour de France on this day, we’ll keep you posted!

The whole route

Pre-ride day 1 – Saturday 7th June: Devon to London

Day 0 – Sunday 8th June: London to Italy (the easy part is over!) & Marco Polo airport to Stra (31 mi / 51 km)

Day 1 – Monday 9th June: Stra to Mantua (81 mi / 131 km)

Day 2 – Tuesday 10th June: Mantua to Colombarone (91 mi / 147 km)

Day 3 – Wednesday 11th June: Colombarone to Baldichieri d’Asti (75 mi / 121 km)

Day 4 – Thursday 12th June: Baldichieri d’Asti to Bruzolo (63 mi / 102 km)

Day 5  – Friday 13th June: Bruzolo to Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne (72 mi / 116 km)

Day 6 – Saturday 14th June: Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne to Venosc (65 mi / 104 km)

Day 7 – Sunday 15th June: Rest day Alpe d’Huez (37 mi / 59 km)

Day 8 – Monday 16th June: Venosc to Allevard (69 mi / 111 km)

Day 9 – Tuesday 17th June: Allevard to Amberieu-en-Bugey (90 mi / 145 km)

Day 10 – Wednesday 18th June: Amberieu-en-Bugey to Macon (54 mi / 87 km)

Day 11 – Thursday 19th June: Macon to Digoin (57 mi / 92 km)

Day 12 – Friday 20th June: Rest day

Day 13 – Saturday 21st June: Digoin to Nevers (67 mi / 107 km)

Day 14 – Sunday 22nd June: Nevers to Briare (61 mi / 98 km)

Day 15 – Monday 23rd June: Briare to Artenay (72 mi / 115 km)

Day 16 – Tuesday 24th June: Artenay to (near) Gace (120 mi / 193 km)

Day 17 – Wednesday 25th June: Rest day

Day 18 – Thursday 26th June: (near) Gace to Bayeux (69 mi / 111 km)

Day 19 – Friday 27th June: Bayeux to Crossways (105 mi / 169 km)

Day 20 – Saturday 28th June: Crossways to Topsham (68 mi / 109 km)

Post ride day 1 – Sunday 29th June: The Nello (97 m / 157 km)
